a5c7b9f00b Instability in Russia results in the deployment of the the nuclear submarine "Alabama". Russian rebels have taken over a nuclear missile site and are fueling them for a possible strike against the USA. Tensions run high undersea, when the launch message is received, followed by an incomplete followup. Could the followup message have been to cancel the earlier orders?
As the Russian civil war gradually gets worse, The U.S. Navy gets activated. Fearing a Nuclear fallout, upstart Commander Hunter and veteran Captain Ramsey along with several other naval officers aboard a Nuclear missile submarine to avert the attack on the United States. But, due to some misunderstanding, Hunter and Ramsey begin to quarrel for command of the Submarine.
I thought this movie was really well done because mostly due to the ending. Shortly into the plot, you can tell that the CO and the XO are not going to get along very well (especially when the CO announces over the speaker system that the XO is 'worried' that the crew members might be 'on the edge.' But the thing about the movie that was really good was the ending and mostly because it didn't go the way I thought it would. I also couldn't believe how many actors turned down roles in this film (Pitt, Pacino and Val Kilmer). The other thing was the idea of mutiny amongst the crew. I don't think there's many army/military movies which show 2 of the leaders fighting each other, even though it wasn't really physical.
This movie was absolutely ridiculous and preposterous. Maybe part of the problem is I am former military, but this made me stop about 1/4 of the way through, and say &quot;What the hell are they doing?&quot;<br/><br/>I will say this was beautifully filmed, the cinematography was superb, and the tight quarters and claustrophobic feeling aboard the submarine was portrayed beautifully. The action sequences, and the tension were also portrayed very well.<br/><br/>But the content of the story was garbage. Nothing like this would ever happen on a nuclear submarine without dire consequences. The Captain of a ship has that position for a reason. He is the Commanding Officer of that ship, and that is a powerful, and sacred thing. To simply take over command by force because you don&#39;t &quot;agree&quot; with how he&#39;s doing things is behavior that used to bring the penalty of death. Basically, that&#39;s all Washington&#39;s character did. Whether he thinks the right thing is being done or not, the Captain is the Captain, and you cannot pull a stunt like this because you think you can out-think him. This was not a good example of a circumstance when a forcible take-over would be permissible. This was an example of new-age &quot;self-esteem, assertiveness-training&quot; hogwash. With Denzel Washington smoldering and strutting right through the middle of it.<br/><br/>Boys will be boys! At the end, Hackman and Washington are basically slapped on the hand, given a &quot;stern talking-to&quot;, told to &quot;not do it again&quot;, and allowed to go on their merry way. Everybody shakes hands, and the world is a better place for it. For crying out loud………<br/><br/>Filmmakers feed us garbage like this because most people honestly don&#39;t know any better. This was laughable…..
The scenario may be dumb and predictable, with a wimpy ending to boot, but it's also sort of fun.
The Unrated Extended Version runs more than 6 minutes longer than the theatrical version. It extends the story in many scenes.
